Watson Williams Elementary Magnet School for the PerformingArts, an inner city public school in Utica, NY performs annually with the Leatherstocking Ballet. Students in grades 3-5 audition for the Dance Specialist at the school, Christy Cannistra-Tibets, for a spot in their elite dance troupe,On the Road Dancers. These students then rehearse both at school and at the ballet company's space at the Dancenter. These students are from a broad range of cultural, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
The Leatherstocking Ballet has entered into a parnership with the Mohawk Valley Center for Refugees through the Utica City Schools. Reugee students and their parents are contacted by an interpreter who arranges for the dancers to come to the rehearals held at the Dancenter. Originally rehearsals were held at the Refugee Center, but this prevented the dancers from fully interacting with their peers. Presently, 10-13 Burmese and Karen students participate in productions with the goal to increase numbers of studnts to include those from other ethnic bakgrounds who come to the region as refugees.
By selecting other, you are able to donate any amount you wish to help support The Leatherstocking Ballet.
*Free tickets may be donated back to the families of the Refugee Center or Conkling Elementary children participating in the performance.
